Bernard Tomic: Will now face Novak Djokovic
Bernard Tomic will face top seed Novak Djokovic in the second round of the ATP Rogers Cup after ousting German qualifier Michael Berrer in three sets in Toronto.
The 19-year-old Australian headed into the match on the back of seven straight defeats but in dug deep to overcome Berrer 6-3 3-6 6-3 to earn a meeting with Djokovic, who received a first-round bye.
Flavio Cipolla breezed past Jurgen Zopp 6-1 6-2 to earn a second-round date with newly-crowned Olympic champion Andy Murray, who was also handed a bye.
Matthew Ebden got off to a nightmare start but recovered well to sink home favourite Peter Polansky 0-6 6-4 6-3.
Canadian wild card Vasek Pospisil gave the Toronto crowd something to cheer, though, when he was on the right end of a three-set result in beating Andreas Seppi 4-6 6-4 7-6 (8/6).
Marcos Baghdatis toppled Carlos Berlocq6-4 6-3 to set up a second-round clash with Croatian 10th seed Marin Cilic,while there were also wins for Jeremy Chardy, Viktor Troicki and Pablo Andujar.
