Laura Robson: held her nerve to serve out for the match in the second set
Laura Robson pulled off one of the biggest wins of her career by knocking out home favourite Roberta Vinci at the Italia Open.
Robson beat the world No 27 and Palermo resident 6-3 7-5 to book a place in the quarter-finals where she will face fifth seed Carla Suarez Navarro.
Robson, currently ranked 113, won the first set comfortably but the second was a real battle with second seed Vinci, 29, using all her experience to keep herself in the match.
Both women faced break points, but it was Robson who made the breakthrough at 5-5, and she held her nerve, despite a series of deuces, in her next service game to win in just over an hour-and-a-half.
Spaniard Suarez Navarro moved into the last eight after Georgian Anna Tatishvili was forced to retire when 6-1 3-2 down in their match.
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, the eighth seed, also progressed, recovering from a set down to defeat American Julia Cohen 3-6 6-3 7-5.
Third seed Julia Goerges didn't even have to take to the court to move through to the last eight, as opponent Katalin Marosi of Hungary was forced to pull out of the tournament.
