Wimbledon champion Roger Federer thinks it is only a matter of time before Andy Murray wins a major title.

The Scot went down 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 to Federer on Sunday, the fourth time he has lost in a grand slam final.

But Federer, whose victory saw him regain the world number one ranking and moved him level with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw on seven Wimbledon titles, had positive words for Murray.

"I really do believe deep down in me he will win grand slams, not just one."
Roger Federer on Andy Murray Quotes of the week

"I think he's giving himself so many looks at big titles," said Federer. "I really do believe deep down in me he will win grand slams, not just one.

"I do wish him all the best. This is genuine. He works extremely hard. He's as professional as you can be.

"Things just didn't quite turn out for him in the finals that he hoped for.

"But today I'm sure he got another step closer to a grand slam title for him. I really do believe and hope for him that he's going to win one soon."
