Heather Watson: Was not intimidated by Centre Court date

Heather Watson looked right at home on Centre Court as she claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-1 victory over experienced Czech Iveta Benesova.

The 20-year-old from Guernsey had to wait until the evening to see where her match would be played, and had little time to prepare for her debut at the hallowed arena.

But she was not intimidated by the occasion as she raced past the world number 55 to claim her first singles win at Wimbledon.

"I'm so pleased to have got through that. It was tough not knowing when I was going to be on but it worked out pretty well for me." Watson said.

"This is my first singles win at Wimbledon including juniors so I'm so pleased. The crowd was amazing."

The young Briton was on top throughout, although she did tighten a little in the closing stages, and now faces a second round clash with America's Jamie Hampton.

Broady beaten

However, fellow Brit Naomi Broady suffered a second successive first-round exit at Wimbledon as she was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7/4) by Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

The 22-year-old was always likely to be up against it against the Spaniard, ranked some 157 places above her in the world, but had several opportunities claim a surprise win.

Broady made a sluggish start, with three break points having to be saved in the first game before Dominquez Lino cashed one in to go 2-1 ahead.

Broady broke back to level things at 4-4, but offered up another break point in the ninth game, which was duly taken.

The Stockport player looked to have a route back in when Dominquez Lino went 0-40 down when serving for the set, but Broady squandered all three break points.

The second set was a more routine affair which stayed with serve all the way through to a tie-break which Broady kicked off with a mini-break.

But she was again unable to make the best of her advantage and from 2-0 up slipped to 5-2 down, with Dominquez Lino seeing things out and moving through to a meeting with Sorana Cirstea.

The third British woman in action, Johanna Konta, saw her Wimbledon debut against Christina McHale left on a knife-edge after play was suspended due to fading light with the players locked at 7-7 in the deciding set.

Konta, who was born in Australia but now represents Britain after receiving citizenship last month, defied all expectations to take the world number 32 so far but will have to come back tomorrow to see if she can turn the 7-6 2-6 7-7 scoreline in her favour.
