American Bethanie Mattek-Sands was knocked out of the Open GDF Suez in Paris after struggling with injury in her second round encounter against Roberta Vinci.

The 26-year-old, who won the 2012 Australian open mixed doubles, lost to Vinci of Italy 6-3 1-6 6-3, failing to make the quarter-finals in the French capital in the process.

Mattek-Sands was visibly in pain in the final set, sobbing during the changeover and calling a therapist to massage her hip and thigh.

Vinci, who has won six WTA Tour singles titles, clinched victory when Mattek-Sands sent a backhand into the net.

The American battled with her serve in the first set in particular, making four double-faults, and could only manage a meagre 45 percent of first serves in the match.

Czech Klara Zakopalovabooked her place in the next round as she thrashed Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-0 6-3, while German Mona Barthel also marched on as she defeated Pauline Parmentier of France 6-3 6-0.
