Marin Cilic has been forced to pull out of the season-opening Chennai Open due to a knee injury.

The Croatian world No.21 won the tournament in 2009 and 2010 but a tendon injury will keep him out of South Asia's only ATP tournament from January 2-8.

"Having started the previous five seasons at the Chennai Open, the city is a home away from home for me," he said.

"Thankfully, I am recovering well from the patella tendon injury and I'll surely be back next year."

Stanislas Wawrinka will defend his title against a decent field that includes Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and world No.10 Nicolas Almagro.

The event, held on the hard courts of the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium, is one of the warm-ups for the Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne on 16 January.
