Igor Andreev and Denis Istomin were among four players to register wins on the opening day of the Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad.
Andreev, the world number 78 from Russia, was a 6-3 6-2 winner against Germany's Mischa Zverev, while Uzbek Istomin, the world number 80, was made to work hard for a 6-3 3-6 6-4 triumph over Austria's Martin Fischer.
There was better news for Fischer's compatriot Andreas Haider-Maurer, who defeated Switzerland's Yann Marti 6-1 6-4, while home hopes were also dashed in the final game of the day as Australia's Peter Luczak saw off Alexander Sadecky 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7/4).
Spain's Nicolas Almagro is the top seed at the clay-court event, and one of four players handed first-round byes along with Stanislas Wawrinka, Mikhail Youzhny and Fernando Verdasco.
