Top seed eases into second round after easy victory

Russian Vera Zvonareva comfortably made it through to the second round of the Pattaya Open, defeating Ksenia Pervak 6-2 6-2. The top seed in the tournament never looked in any trouble against her compatriot and produced a fine performance. Zvonareva will be hoping to return to the form which witnessed her claim the title in Indian Wells 12 months ago, beating Ana Ivanovic in the final. The 25-year-old also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in the same season in what was arguably the best time in her career. Victory in the opening match has now set up a second round tie against Italian Alberta Brianti. The 29-year-old defeated New Zealand's Sacha Jones 6-4 4-6 6-1 in her opening game of the tournament. Elsewhere in the competition, fourth-seed Yaroslava Shvedova made it through to the second round with a 6-2 6-4 win over Ayumi Morita, whilst eighth-seed Julia Goerges saw off Anna Gerasimou 6-4 6-4.
