Thai ace Tamarine Tanasugarn successfully defended her WTA Ordina Open title by defeating Yanina Wickmayer 6-3 7-5 in the final in Holland on Saturday.

The unseeded 32-year-old veteran, who defeated Russian world number one Dinara Safina in the semi-finals, swiftly took the first set from her teenage opponent, who carried a leg injury into the match

But she met with more resistance from the 19-year-old Belgian in the second set before eventually breaking Wickmayer's serve in the 12th game to take out the match.

Tanasugarn was full of praise for her opponent afterwards, telling centre court after accepting her trophy: "I'd like to congratulate Yanina.

Great tournament

"You played a great tournament. Definitely, I'm dead at the end. You're making me run so much and playing so well."

The performance from Wickmayer, the world number 72 and Belgium's highest ranked women's player, could lift her ranking towards the top 50, tournament organisers said.

Wickmayer congratulated Tamarine afterwards, telling the Thai: "You really deserve the win, good job."
