Andy Roddick recorded his first win of 2009 with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 result against Ivan Navarro at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha.
The American, seeded fourth, came into the tournament off the back of a loss to Nikolay Davydenko at the World Championship exhibition event last week.
However, he responded to the disappointing start to the new season with a comprehensive victory over Spaniard Navarro.
Big-serving Roddick hammered down eight aces as he needed just over an hour to clinch his place in the second round of the tournament.
World number one Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, the defending champion, having beaten Stanislas Wawrinka in last year's final, are also in the draw.
Fifth seed Gael Monfils also cruised through his opening round match, the Frenchman comfortably beating Jan Hernych 6-2 6-2.
There were also straightforward wins for Nicolas Devilder and Victor Hanescu but Belgian Christophe Rochus suffered something of a surprise loss, going down 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) to Sergiy Stakhovsky.
