It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Brits during qualifying for next week’s All-England Championships at Wimbledon.
While there were victories for Dan Evans, Edward Corrie and Joshua Milton, there were exits for Richard Gabb, Alexander Ward and Daniel Cox.
Evans survived a brace of tie-breaks to beat Jaroslav Pospisil of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-2).
Milton took care of another Czech player, Jan Hernych, who lost 3-6 6-3 6-4 while Corrie disposed of Spain’s Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-3 6-1.
But out went Cox, beaten by German Matthias Bachinger, 6-3 6-3 as well as Ward who could only win five games against Yuichi Sugita of Japan.
Gabb, meanwhile, retired midway through the second set of his tie with Russian Andrey Kuznetsov.
In other matches at Roehampton, former world No 8 Jurgen Melzer beat his younger brother Gerald 6-1 6-4 in just 47 minutes.
Jurgen, 10 years older at 34, is a former doubles champion at SW19 and he admitted: "It's the worst feeling.
"Some people like to compete against family, and we do when we play cards or video games, but it's not the same thing when it's a tournament match."
Gerald, the world No 169, added: "Neither of us were happy to see the draw.
"We had a good practice and were looking forward to playing at Wimbledon but it's not the kind of match you'd want to play twice."
Jurgen, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2010, now faces Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands in round two.
Qualifying for the women’s singles starts on Tuesday.
