Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal both cruised to wins at the China Open

Murray, who won the Shenzhen Open on Sunday in his quest to book one of the eight spots at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London, maintained his good form in Beijing.

The sixth seed broke twice in succession at the start of each set to wrap up a comfortable straight-sets win in one hour and 19 minutes against the world No 35.

Murray, who requires another strong week to help him climb up from 10th in the standings, was made to dig deep in his last match against Poland's Jerzy Janowicz, but he had no such problems against Cuevas, hitting an impressive 16 winners and winning 73 per cent of his first-serve points.

The Scot made a flying start to his second-round encounter at the National Tennis Center, breaking Cuevas in the first and third games and holding serve twice to race into a 4-0 lead.

Cuevas held his next two service games, but so did Murray to win the first set 6-2 with the minimum of fuss.

The start of the second set mirrored the first when Murray broke twice and held his own serve to surge into a 4-0 lead, but Cuevas then broke back before holding his serve to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

Annoyed at losing two successive games, Murray upped the ante by breaking Ceuvas for the fifth and final time in the next game before holding serve to win the second set 6-2 and wrap up victory in convincing fashion.

The British No 1 will next meet Marin Cilic for a place in the semi-finals on Friday after the US Open Champion eased past Portuguese No 1 Joao Sousa 6-3 6-3 in 71 minutes.
