Second seed Alize Cornet came from behind to beat Shahar Peer in the second round of the WTA Guangzhou International Women's Open on Wednesday.
Cornet was the only one of the eight seeds to reach round two and it looked like another upset was on the cards when Peer won the first set 6-3.
However, French ace Cornet broke her opponent to take the second set 7-5 and then easily won the third 6-1 to progress.
In other action, China’s Wang Yafan, who stunned top seed Samantha Stosur in the first round, continued her progress with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win over Croatia’s Petra Martic.
Another Chinese hope, Kai-Lin Zhang, who had defeated No 7 seed Jana Cepelova last time, also progressed with a 6-2 7-5 victory against Alison Riske.
Romania’s Monica Niculescu, who had dumped out No 4 player Bojana Jovanovski, easily won through 6-2 6-1 against Japan’s Misaki Doi, while Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky triumphed 6-2 6-2 against Spain’s Silvia Soler Espinosa, who had beaten third seed Sloane Stephens last time.
Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei beat China’s Zhu Lin 6-4 6-2 and Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig triumphed 6-4 6-4 against Hong Kong’s Zhang Ling, who had dumped fifth seed Zarina Diyas out of the tournament.
