Former world No 7 Nicole Vaidisova made a winning return to tennis at the Coleman Vision Tennis Championships in New Mexico on Tuesday.
Vaidisova, a wildcard at the ITF Women's Circuit event in Albuquerque, beat Sesil Karatantchevain 6-3 6-4 in the first round after breaking her opponent three times, while she was broken just once herself.
The victory was the 25-year-old’s first match in more than four and a half years after she retired in March 2010.
"Surreal, nerve-wracking! I am so glad I got to play," Vaidisova told the WTA's official website.
The Czech player won six WTA titles before she retired and also made it to the semi-finals of the 2006 French Open and the 2007 Australian Open, reaching No 7 in the world at just 18 years of age.
She will next take on the winner of the clash between No 3 seed Johanna Konta and Julia Cohen.
