Guillermo Garcia-Lopez recovered from a slow start to reach the third round of the ATP Tour's Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University.
The Spaniard, seeded fifth, lost the opening set to Dustin Brown before rallying to win 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-2.
Jarkko Nieminen is also through to the third round after the No 15 seed overcame Benjamin Becker 7-5 6-4.
Defending Winston-Salem Open champion Jurgen Melzer fell at the first hurdle, though, after he was brushed aside by the in-form David Goffin.
Goffin was a first-round loser to Andy Murray at Wimbledon but the Belgian hasn’t lost since then, claiming three Challenger Tour titles on the bounce before claiming a 6-3 6-4 success over Melzer.
Sam Querrey set up a second-round clash with fellow American Steve Johnson after beating Pere Riba 7-6 (7-5) 6-4, while Paul-Henri Mathieu toppled wild card Robby Ginepri 6-3 7-5.
Jerzy Janowicz was too strong for Carlos Berlocq as he raced to a 6-1 6-4 victory while Frank Dancevic, Igor Sijsling, Federico Delbonis, Adrian Mannarino, Blaz Rola and Aleksandr Nedovyesov also posted first-round victories.
