The all-North American clash was a tight affair but the Canadian eventually overcame his opponent from the United States 7-5 7-5.

Pospisil will next face Bernard Tomic who upset the home fans with a 6-1 7-6 (7/2) win over Alejandro Falla.

Fourth-seed Radek Stepanek also progressed to the last-eight with a 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 win over Argentina's Guido Pella.
