It was a bad day for the seeds at the Swedish Open in Bastad as several of the leading names made early exits.
Third seed Camila Giorgi of Italy and seventh-seeded Spaniard Maria Teresa Torro were both beaten in first round action.
Giorgi went down 3-6 6-3 6-2 to Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski, while Germany’s Julia Goerges thrashed Torro 6-2 6-0.
Meanwhile, sixth seed Annika Beck of Germany departed at the second round stage as she lost out 6-2 4-6 6-7 (2/7) against Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena Vecino.
Elsewhere on Wednesday there were wins for Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers, Jana Cepelova of Slovakia, Spain’s Silvia Soler Espinosa and German Mona Barthel.
