Briton Dan Evans has been beaten at the first hurdle, losing in straight sets to Tobias Kamke on the opening day of the AEGON International in Eastbourne.

The world No 144 from Birmingham, who has a wild card for Wimbledon, was sent packing in just 67 minutes, as his German opponent eased into the second round 6-2 6-3.

The 28-year-old Kamke, ranked 54 places higher than Evans, lost just 14 points from nine service games and now faces the No 3 seed and defending champion Feliciano Lopez who has a bye into the last 16.

Fellow Brit Kyle Edmund also bowed out early, the 19-year-old faring better but still falling 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 to American Sam Querrey.

Fifth seed Ivo Karlovic was also a first-round casualty, the giant Croatian losing 6-4 6-4 to France's Jeremy Chardy while eighth seed Federico Delbonis lost to Martin Klizan.

Last year's runner-up Gilles Simon did make it through, the Frenchman beating Chris Guccione 7-6 (7/4) 6-4.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet is the top seed on the Sussex coast, with one other Brit – James Ward – also taking part in the men’s singles.
