Great Britain teenager Katy Dunne was forced to retire with a hip injury in the deciding set of her first-round match against Camila Giorgi at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham.
The 19-year-old, from Buckinghamshire, came through two rounds of qualifying against players ranked more than 300 places above her to make the main draw of a WTA Tour event for the first time.
Dunne showed no signs of nerves on the big stage when she came out for the final match of the day on Court 3 against Italian Giorgi as she moved ahead with an early break before claiming the set 6-4.
However, Giorgi, who has just climbed up into the top 50, quickly regained the momentum as she pushed through a brisk second set 6-1.
Dunne, 440 in the world, did her best to battle on, but could not continue after trailing 2-1 in the decider.
There will be more home interest on Tuesday, when new British No 1 Heather Watson - who has moved above injured Laura Robson to 69 in the latest WTA rankings - will take on a qualifier while Johanna Konta faces Japan's 14th seed Nara Kurumi.
Elsewhere on Monday, No 10 seed Bojana Jovanoski, of Croatia, suffered an early exit when she was beaten 6-4 6-4 by Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.
Top ranked Ana Ivanovic - the former world No 1 and 2008 French Open champion - was among the eight seeds handed a bye into the second round. The Serb will play Mona Barthel after the German came through 6-1 6-4 against Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia.
Switzerland's Belinda Bencic won the battle of the 17-year-olds, beating Croatian Donna Vekic 6-4 6-4, the 2013 AEGON Classic runner-up to set up a second-round clash with Slovak seventh seed Daniela Hantuchova, last year's winner.
The shock of the day came as American qualifier Victoria Duval, ranked 126th in the world, beat 13th seed Caroline Garcia of France, who stands 81 places higher in the rankings.
Francesca Schiavone made a seamless transition from the clay season to grass, winning her first round encounter with Zheng Jie, 6-3 6-4 to set up a second round tie with No 3 seed Sloane Stephens of America.
American Madison Keys made swift progress as she beat Teliana Pereira in straight sets and compatriot Alison Riske is also through following her 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 win over qualifier Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine.
Riske, seeded 15th, will now face Kichenok's sister Nadia in the second round, after she beat Sharon Fichman of Canada in three sets, 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.
