World No 16 Tommy Haas made a winning return from injury on Thursday as he beat Alejandro Falla in straight sets to get his BMW Open title defence off to a flying start in Munich.

The second-seeded home favourite denied the Colombian a 100th ATP tour victory as he converted five of seven break points on his way to a 6-2 6-4 win.

Haas secured victory in just 74 minutes in his first match since a fourth-round exit to Roger Federer at Indian Wells - a shoulder injury having sidelined him subsequently.

The 36-year-old, who defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber to claim the claycourt title for the first time last year, will now face seventh seed Andreas Seppi in the quarter-finals.

Italian Seppi beat Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos 6-3 6-4 as he recorded back-to-back main draw wins for the first time this season.

Ricardas Berankis, who took the place of injured fourth seed Gael Monfils in the draw, made the most of his opportunity to feature by beating Jurgen Melzer in a thriller.

The 23-year-old Lithuanian saved two match points on his way to a 7-6 3-6 7-6 (8-6) victory in a clash that lasted two hours and 25 minutes.

Austrian Melzer was 6-4 up in the final set tie-break but was unable to claim victory with either of his match points, double faulting on his first attempt.
