Second seed Sara Errani endured a real scare before coming through her first round match at the season-opening Shenzhen Open in China.

The Italian looked on course for a comfortable victory against local wildcard Zheng Saisai as she breezed through the first set without dropping a game.

But the Chinese teenager responded in impressive fashion by taking the next and then forced a tie-break in the decider before eventually falling to a courageous 0-6 6-3 6-7 (3/7) defeat.

Third seed Klara Zakopalova enjoyed a more straightforward passage as she overcame Croatia's Donna Vekic in straight sets, winning 6-3 7-5.

There was something for home fans to cheer at the Longgang Tennis Centre as seventh-seeded Zheng Jie produced an excellent display to dismiss Israel's Shahar Peer 6-0 6-3.

Eighth seed Annike Beck of Germany also progressed in straight sets as she saw off Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia 6-3 6-4.

Elsewhere, there were first round wins for Vania King, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, Jana Cepelova and Viktorija Golubic.
