Serena Williams has been named the WTA Tour player of the year after a dazzling run of 48 wins in 50 games that saw her become Wimbledon and US Open champion.

The 31-year-old American started slowly in the first three months of 2012 with a fourth-round exit at the Australian Open, but the world No.3 bounced back with back-to-back tournament wins in Charleston and Madrid in April and May.

She suffered defeat in round one of the French Open, but went on an incredible run that also earned an Olympic gold medal and over $7m in prize money, second only to Victoria Azarenka, despite playing three fewer tournaments.

It is the fourth time Williams has won the WTA award after successes in 2002, 2008 and 2009 and is a remarkable turnaround after a foot injury in 2011 threatened to derail her illustrious career.

She also picked up two more WTA doubles titles, her 13th Grand Slam doubles title at Wimbledon and third Olympic gold in doubles, with Venus.

After winning the WTA final in Istanbul last month, Serena said: "I've always said if I'm playing well and doing everything right, it's really difficult to beat me.

"I still believe that, which is great that I can still kind of play that way. I feel like here are always ways for me to improve, but I think it's a true statement, without trying to sound really full of myself or anything."

The player of the year award is voted for by international tennis media.
