Laura Robson moves into the last 16
Greg Rusedski described Laura Robson's victory over world No 8 Li Na as a career defining moment.
"Beating Clijsters was great but to beat Li Na was that much more special."
Greg Rusedski Quotes of the week
Robson became the first British woman into the last 16 at a grand slam since Sam Smith at Wimbledon in 1998, and the first in New York since Jo Durie 21 years ago, after beating Na 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 6-2.
The 18-year-old will now play defending champion Samantha Stosur in the last 16 and former US Open finalist Rusedski believes this, more than her victory over Kim Clijsters in the previous round, is a massive moment in the blossoming career of Robson.
"It is so impressive from Laura Robson," he told Sky Sports. "I think mentally she was so tough. She had that difficult call in the third set which she bounced back from and then she got another difficult call, but she showed such maturity beyond her age.
"For me this is probably the biggest win of her career by far. A Brit has finally beaten a top ten player on the ladies side which is fantastic and she is the real deal.
"This is a defining career moment. Beating Clijsters was great but to beat Li Na was that much more special."
Fellow Sky Sports expert Annabel Croft was similarly impressed by Robson's victory as she came back from losing a tight second set tie-break to blow away last year's French Open champion in a ruthless final set.
"It was just an extraordinary performance. To be able to back up what she did against Kim Clijsters a couple of days ago," she said. "I thought the response of losing that tie-break and the manner was so impressive.
"It was so tight that second set. A lot of players would have been disappointed and their level would have dropped off. But she came back so strongly in that final set and what a scoreline to finish off the world No 8. This is a dream."
