Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova have both advanced to the semi-finals of the New Haven Open after wins over a couple of WTA rising stars as they prepare for next week's US Open.

Wozniacki racked up four consecutive wins in this tournament between 2008 and 2011 and is on course to mount a serious challenge to regain her crown.

The Dane saw off American Sloane Stephens in straight sets, 7-6 6-2, to set up a last four meeting with another youngster, the in-form Simona Halep.

Halep is eyeing a fourth tournament win in seven and defeated Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-1 7-6 to make the semis.

Kvitova is the reigning champion at New Haven and the Czech fought back from a set down to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6 6-2 7-5.

Despite losing more points than she won, the former Wimbledon champion did enough to see off her Russian opponent and ensure her title defence continued.

Fight

"It's important to have matches like these where you have to fight until the end where you're not necessarily playing your best. That's part of tennis," said Kvitova.

"Of course, I prefer shorter, two set matches, but I won the last point and that's the important thing."

The 23-year-old has never defended a title before but is now just two wins away from achieving the feat.

"I think coming back to a place where you played very well the last year, you have a lot of emotions and you know the pressure is there as defending champion and you're defending a lot of points," she said. "But on the other hand, you know that you can play well here."

Kvitova will now face fellow Czech Klara Zakopalova after she triumphed in her quarter-final tie with Elena Vesnina, 4-6 6-0 6-4.
