Roger Federer, the 2009 champion and fourth seed takes to the Roland Garros stage on Friday along with Maria Sharapova, who has assumed the mantle of women's title favourite.

Federer reached the third round with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win over Argentine qualifier Diego Sebastian Schwartzman.

It was Federer's 60th win at the tournament and he now faces Russian 31st seed Dmitry Tursunov on Court Philippe Chatrier for a place in the last 16 as he looks to land his 18th Grand Slam title.

Sharapova, who had been due to play Serena Williams in the quarter-finals until the American's shock exit at the hands of Spain's Garbine Muguruza, recovered from 4-2 down in the opening set to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5 6-2 to set up a meeting against Argentina's Paula Ormaechea.

The 2012 French Open champion and seventh seed will fancy her chances of progressing against the 75th-ranked Ormaechea, who reached her first WTA Tour final in Bogota earlier in the year before losing out to Jelena Jankovic.

Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska beat Karolina Pliskova in straight sets to set up a meeting against world No 72 Aila Tomljanovic from Croatia.

Closing the show on Chatrier will be hard-hitting Canadian Milos Raonic and 29th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Djokovic on Lenglen

On Court Suzanne Lenglen, second seed Novak Djokovic, who is searching for his first Roland Garros title, takes on fast improving Marin Cilic while in the clash of the day, French favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces giant Pole Jerzy Janowicz in a battle of the big servers.

Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova is back in action against 2010 French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur and the experienced Daniela Hantuchova takes on eighth-seeded German Angelique Kerber.

Wild card Taylor Townsend showed what an exciting talent she is on Wednesday by upsetting 20th seed and leading Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-4 4-6 6-4.

In her first Grand Slam tournament, the 18-year-old will face Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro on Court One for a place in the last 16.

In other men's action, Latvia's Ernests Gulbis goes up against veteran Czech Radek Stepanek, while American 10th seed John Isner meets Spain's Tommy Robredo in the pick of the other matches.
