Tomas Berdych has become the fifth player to book his place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month.

The Czech guaranteed he will join Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro at the O2 after poor results for the other contenders this week.

Berdych himself lost in the first round in Basle but so did Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic are staking their hopes on good performances in the Paris Masters next week.

It is the fourth consecutive year Berdych has qualified for the eight-man end-of-season showpiece, which begins on November 4.

This week could also be decisive in Roger Federer's bid to reach London, with the six-time champion the only one of the contenders to win his first-round match in Basle.

Ninth spot will qualify due to Andy Murray's withdrawal following back surgery and the race could go down to the wire in Paris.
