Swindon Robins closed to within a point of Poole Pirates at the top of the Elite League after both claimed victories on Wednesday.

The Pirates eased to a comfortable 57-37 win over Lakeside Hammers at Wimborne Road, but Swindon went one better as they claimed an excellent 52-41 win at King's Lynn Stars.

The track may have looked on the heavy side but the Pirates made light work of seeing off play-off hopefuls Lakeside, to cling on to top spot in the Sky Sports Elite league

The Pirates set their stall out early and quickly ran up a double figure lead after just five heats, with five different race winners and just one place.

The Pirates went into the interval with an 18 point advantage but the break seemed to favour the visitors as, after 12 heats without a race winner, Dave Watt remedied that situation with a ride that needed to be good.

It was too little too late though and the Pirates brought the curtain down on a largely one-sided affair, with Krys Kasprzak storming to victory under pressure all the way from Peter Karlsson as Holder and Ward were enduring their own early battle for the minor placing.

Intent

Whilst Poole made no mistake, Swindon sent out a massive statement of intent with an excellent win at the Norfolk Arena.

Former Lynn man Troy Batchelor stormed to a 15-point maximum on his old home track and there were solid performances down the order as six of the seven Robins won at least one race.

The result does major damage to the home side's own play-off aspirations, and a measure of Swindon's dominance was the fact they had twelve of the fifteen race wins.

Boss Alun Rossiter said: "Troy will take the plaudits and rightly so, because he was outstanding, but this was a fantastic all-round performance and it showed exactly what we're all about.

"'Frank' Lampart was great especially as he struggled a bit here last time, and I'm really pleased for Steady too. We asked him some questions recently and he's responded, and if he keeps on going like this we'll be more than happy."
