Josh Bates was crowned British U21 champion on a night of high drama and incidents at Monmore Green on Tuesday.
Sheffield and Mildenhall youngster Bates got the better of Adam Ellis in a twice re-started final after first Stefan Nielsen and then Jason Garrity had been disqualified.
Bates said: "I'm just absolutely over the moon - I came here thinking I'd be happy with sixth or eighth place but I've won it!
"I've been run over, had a few crashes, a lot of re-runs but I've done it and I'm just so happy.
"It's going to give me a lot of encouragement and a lot of confidence so hopefully this will just be the start for me."
The top four now progress to the World U21 qualifying rounds, with Bates and Garrity set to race at Leicester on May 10.
Ellis and Nielsen will compete in the meetings to be staged in Germany and Italy respectively.
