Guest rider Troy Batchelor held his nerve in the final heat to give Poole Pirates a 46-44 victory over Wolverhampton Wolves in their Sky Sports Elite League clash at Wimborne Road.

Batchelor was the only man representing the Pirates in the last race of the evening after Darcy Ward had crashed out, but the 25-year-old Australian came home first to preserve Poole's two-point advantage.

Ward had hit the tapes at the start of the heat - leading to a 15 metre penalty - and then crashed out at the restart, leading to him being eliminated.

Wolverhampton riders Adam Skornicki and Tai Woffinden held a provisional 5-1 in the heat at the time that Ward slid off, but on third start Batchelor took the lead and did not relinquish it.

It was a good night all round for Batchelor, who was Poole's leading scorer with 13 points, while Skkornicki top-scored for the Wolves, with 12 points.

The Wolves, who took one point away from the contest, are still three points clear of Birmingham Brummies at the top of the table.

Ward had been Poole's star earlier in the meeting, reeling off four wins as Poole built a lead that ultimately would not be overhauled.

Elsewhere in the Elite League, the Brummies cut the gap to Wolverhampton at the top of the table with a 51-42 victory against Lakeside Hammers.

The Essex based team made the worst possible start, conceding 5-1s in the opening three heats and they never recovered.

Ben Barker won four heats and finished as leading scorer with paid 14, as Birmingham took all three points away from the clash.
