Three time speedway world champion Jason Crump has announced his retirement from the sport.

The 37-year-old Australian had already stepped down from top level racing after confirming he would not take his place in the 2013 Grand Prix Series despite qualifying after finishing sixth.

But with more surgery required on a shoulder injury, which would have ruled him out for much of the 2013 season - he has decided to hang-up his kevlars.

"The specialist says the surgery needs to be done sooner rather than later if I am to lead a normal life," Crump is quoted by speedwaygp.com.

Crump, who was born in Bristol, spent much of his career racing in England spending time with Poole Pirates, Peterborough Panthers, Swindon Robins, Oxford Cheetahs, King's Lynn Stars and Belle Vue Aces.

He first raced in Europe in 1991 and brings a stunning 21-year career to an end.

As well as his world individual titles, he also helped Australia win the World Cup in 1999.
