Leicester Lions could be plying their trade in the Elite League next season if promoter David Hemsley has his way.

Lions finished bottom of the Premier League on their return to the sport after a 28-year hiatus, but a much-improved effort this year has seen them reach the play-offs.

And Hemsley hopes constructive talks with the sport's authorities will lead to an elevation regardless of their performance in the remaining weeks of the season.

"It has always been my intention to return Leicester to the very highest level of competition which we had in the city in the 1970s and early 1980s," Hemsley told the Leicester Mercury.

"If, after negotiations with the British Speedway Promoters' Association, we find that conditions are right for our club then we will move into the Sky Sports Elite League ready for the 2013 season."

Elevation to the top tier would require Hemsley to bolster the squad and he hopes to secure a big name at Beaumont Park.

"We will search for an out-and-out No.1 who can lead our side forward into the new era," he added.

"I will endeavour to secure a world-renowned rider, somebody who every person in Leicester will be able to associate with and become a household name like Lineker and Underwood from the football and rugby."
