Birmingham Brummies are through to the Sky Sports Elite League play-offs for the first time despite a 46-44 defeat at home to Swindon Robins on Wednesday.

The Brummies were in control for the majority of the encounter at Perry Barr but a late Robins 5-1 denied them.

Brummies manager Phil Morris said: "I probably have the same emotions as I did against Poole on Monday really - we did well but not well enough and they came back at the end.

"We started well this time and then drifted off at the end so it is difficult to know what to do with the riding order.

"The positive is that we are in the play-offs now. Forget everything that has gone on, we now have two massive meetings to concentrate on."

The sides will meet again at Perry Barr on Monday with the return in Wiltshire on October 1.

After the Brummies dominated, Swindon launched a brilliant comeback to move level in heat 12 before condemning the Perry Barr men to defeat in front of their home fans with a 5-1 in heat 15.

Reserves Martin Smolinski and Nicolas Covatti made good contributions, as did Sebastian Ulamek and Josh Auty.

However, Ben Barker and Danny King both faded in the latter stages - and with number one Bjarne Pedersen out of form they just fell short.

Panthers miss out

In the night's other meeting, Peterborough Panthers failure to pick up a point against Coventry Bees meant Lakeside qualified for the play-offs.

Scott Nicholls led the way with 13+1 points as the Bees ran out 52-40 winners.

Lakeside will host Poole Pirates in the first leg of their play-off semi-final next Monday.
