Australian star Darcy Ward has told Sky Sports he is hoping to be fit for the Speedway World Cup next month.

The Poole Pirates ace underwent surgery on Monday after breaking his hand whilst riding in Poland over the weekend.

The 20-year-old is hoping to only be sidelined for three weeks, which would mean he is back in the saddle in time to ride for Australia.

"Hopefully it will only be three weeks and I can come back for the World Cup and get the gold with Australia," he told Sky Sports.

"But you don't want to push it too early. It's a long career and I've got some plates in there, so I don't really want to mess it up.

"I'd like to come back as soon as I can, ride for Poole, ride for all my teams and keep winning.

"It's one of those things I wish hadn't happened. But what can you do? The World Cup is a big one and I really want to ride. My goal at the moment is getting back for that and we'll see what we can do there."
