Eastbourne Eagles pulled off a major shock as they won the Knockout Cup after overcoming league champions Poole Pirates.

Poole were odds-on favourites to claim victory - but they came up against an in-form Eastbourne who claimed victory with an aggregate success over the weekend.

Eastbourne opened up with a 57-35 win over Poole at home on Saturday despite top-man Scott Nicholls scoring just 6+2.

However, Eastbourne had plenty of other big scorers with Lee Richardson (12+1) and Ed Kennett (12) both scoring well.

Lewis Bridger (9+1) and Cameron Woodward (8+2) also had paid double figures.

Poole were decidedly off colour - particularly Chris Holder who managed just eight points from six rides.

Bjarne Pedersen grabbed 12 but there was just too little else in terms of back-up.

That left Poole with 22 points to make up at Wimborne Road, which most would not think was beyond them.

However, again Eastbourne had other ideas as they claimed an outstanding 45-45 draw which gave them a 102-80 victory.

Holder found some better form with 12, but surprisingly there were no other home riders who could hit double figures.

The Eagles were in excellent form with Nicholls showing more like his normal pace as he top-scored with 13, whilst Richardson was again looking good with 11 and that proved too much for Poole - who were denied the league-cup double.
