Marco Fu clinched his second career ranking event title on Sunday with a 9-6 victory over world number one Neil Robertson in the final of the Australian Goldfields Open in Bendigo.
Home favourite Robertson beat Mark Selby in the semi-finals to reach the final for the first time while Fu got the better of Robert Milkins, but he was the underdog against the world No 1.
A 98 break in the opening frame set the tone for the Hong Kong player although Melbourne-born Robertson hit back with 78 and 92 to take the next two frames.
However, despite falling behind Fu secured the next three frames to surge ahead for good and never looked back.
Robertson threatened a late fightback when he reduced the deficit to 7-6 after Fu had established a three-frame cushion with a break of 70 in frame 11, but the 35-year-old held his nerve and won the two final frames he needed for victory in the best-of-17 encounter.
The success was Fu's first in a ranking event since 2007, and he told the World Snooker website: "I had a good season last year and played some good snooker, but it was frustrating not to win a title.
"This takes a lot of pressure off me and I can enjoy the rest of the season. The standard is so high now that it's just very nice to be able to win a tournament.
"Neil and I played the best snooker throughout the week, although today it didn't really happen for us. We both got a bit tired towards the end, and twitchy here and there."
