The 37-year-old Scot won the prestigious tournament at Wembley in 1999 and 2006 and - after another seven-year wait - he is now hoping to complete a career hat-trick at Alexandra Palace in London, the event's new home.
"Maybe it's the seven-year itch," said Higgins, who has lost in the first round in 10 of his 18 appearances in the tournament.
"People say I've got a pretty poor record at the Masters but at the end of the day I've won it twice and lost in a couple of finals.
"It's a great tournament and you love to win it because it's one of the biggest but it's never really been a great tournament for me.
"I'm really pleased it's at Alexandra Palace now. The Wembley Arena was pretty soulless. It's found a good home."
