The reigning world number one was beaten for the second time in the event to leave himself rooted to the foot of the Group A table with two matches - against Shaun Murphy and Stuart Bingham - still remaining.
Indeed, at one stage it appeared an out-of-sorts Selby was in danger of being whitewashed by his opponent from China, fine breaks of 96 and then 79 helping Ding take the first four frames.
However the 'Jester from Leicester' managed to put a smile back on his face by taking the final two frames, including knocking in a run of 52 in the last that came to a premature end when he accidentally potted the green.
In the second match of the night, John Higgins battled back twice against Stephen Lee to triumph 4-2 and making it two wins from two in Group B.
The Scotsman trailed 1-0 and then 2-1 before taking the final three frames on the spin, though Lee missed a glorious chance to grab a point in a gripping last that saw him fluff firstly the pink and then the black when he needed both to make it three apiece.
Higgins made the most of the let-off, rolling in the black under pressure to seal victory and move himself level with Judd Trump, who also has a perfect record after two outings, in the standings.
