Siobhan-Marie O'Connor: Set a new personal best in the 100m freestyle

Siobhan-Marie O'Connor had a solid weekend in Monaco at the Mare Nostrum Tour with a 100m freestyle PB the highlight.

The Bath swimmer, 18, has been in fantastic form in the past few months and, with the Commonwealth Games less than two months away, will have been keen to continue in the same vein.

Things started well for O'Connor as she qualified fifth fastest the 200m freestyle final with a time of 1:59.66. That proved to be an accurate assessment as the Sky Academy Sports Scholar touched home in fifth in the medal race despite an improved time of 1:58.58 as South Africa's Karin Prinsloo (1:57.17) took gold.

Disappointment

In the 100m butterfly, O'Connor put the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a place in the 'A' final behind her to win the 'B' final in a time of 58.88. That ensured she finished almost two seconds clear of the field and would have been enough to secure a bronze medal in the 'A' final.

The following day saw mixed fortunes for the British 200IM champion as she was disqualified from her favoured 200IM event before impressing in the 100m freestyle.

O'Connor qualified for the final in sixth and proceeded to set a personal best of 55.00 in the final to finish the race in fifth place as Pernille Blume (54.49) of Denmark won gold.

Despite finishing the meet without a medal - a first for O'Connor in 2014 - the GB Commonwealth Games medal hope can take plenty of encouragement from the times she posted as she heads to Barcelona for the second Mare Nostrum meet next weekend.
