Team Wales have announced their 33-strong athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with Sky Academy Sports Scholar Olivia Breen included.

The Paralympic bronze medallist has been selected for the long jump, an event she only took up ahead of this season and in which she registered a personal best jump of 4.08m on Sunday.

Breen was delighted to make the team but revealed that keeping her selection under wraps has not been easy.

“I can’t wait, I feel really privileged to be able to represent Wales,” she told Sky Sports. “I got a call on Sunday saying that I’d been nominated and then I got a call on Tuesday night, but I missed the first call because I was cooking dinner.

Really happy

“I was really happy when I found out but I couldn’t say anything, which was really hard because all my friends have been asking me when I find out and I’ve not been able to tell them.”

The 17-year-old could have represented England or Ireland as well, but has no regrets over the decision she has made.

“It was a hard decision and my dad is Irish but all my mum’s side of the family live in Wales and go there a lot more than I go to Ireland. I feel more Welsh,” she explained.

Executive director of Disability Sport Wales, Jon Morgan, was pleased with the squad selected and believes the experiences of past championships should bear the team in good stead.

“This is a particularly talented squad of athletes who will be representing Team Wales," he said. "We very much hope they will be able to bring their experience of Paralympic, World & European Championships to the fore when competing in Glasgow."
