Lucy Garner returned to racing after illness to record her fifth podium finish of the season at the Radobank Marianne Vos Classic in Aalburg on Saturday.

The Sky Academy Sports Scholar finished second after a sprint finish ahead of Emma Johansson in third, with only three time World road race champion, Marianne Vos, able to get the better of her.

It was another strong performance from Garner and she was full of praise for the efforts of her Giant-Shimano team-mates for putting her in a position to compete.

“The team rode such a strong race with everyone attacking and going with moves,” she told the team’s official website.

“On the last lap we knew it was more than likely going to come down to a sprint so Sara (Mustonen) helped me on to Vos’ wheel, but she was too quick round the last corner to catch.

“I am really happy with second through as I was a bit ill after the Tour of Britain so to bounce back with a podium here is nice.”

The 19-year-old from Leicester followed it up by helping team-mate Amy Pieters to tenth place at the Gooik-Geraardsbergen-Gooik in Belgium the following day.
