Lucy Garner secured her third podium finish of the season as a sprint finish saw her take third place in the Dwars Door de Westhoek in Belgium on Sunday.

The Sky Academy Sports Scholar is still looking for her first win of 2014 but her consistency suggests that that elusive victory isn’t far away.

The race was won by breakaway leader Anna van der Breggen in 3:17:10 with Garner narrowly beaten in the sprint for second by Jolien D'Hoore, both riders being given a time 12 seconds behind Van Der Breggen.

“The team worked so hard to bring the breaks back after the race split on the last climb but we couldn’t get Anna back at the end,” said Garner, who finished sixth in the race last year.

“I was really happy with my positioning at the end and did a good sprint to take third.”

Team Giant-Shimano coach Dirk Reuling added: “Lucy kept cool at the end and rode an intelligent finish to take second in the bunch sprint while van der Breggen stayed away to take the win.”

Tough weekend

Elsewhere, Quillan Isidore endured a tough weekend at the BMX European League in Besancon, France over the weekend.

The 17-year-old Sky Academy Sports Scholar crashed out in the quarter-finals of the Elite Men’s competition in his first race back on the international stage.

It is only a matter of weeks since Isidore returned from a lengthy absence following a nasty crash in July of last year and so it was a relief to see him walk away unscathed.

The fall may have been disappointing for the Peckham Challengers rider but a number of impressive triumphs in the past month will give him confidence that he is returning to his very best.
