Lee Westwood claimed a crucial point for European with 3&2 victory over Matt Kuchar at Medinah.

The Englishman had garnered only one point from three outings in the first two days and was sent out in match eight by captain Jose Maria Olazabal.

However, the point - his 18th in Ryder Cups - was as important as any on the final day providing vital momentum to the final groups.

Westwood was never behind in the match but it was not until the 12th when he started started to take a decisive grip on the match as Kuchar missed a par putt to fall behind once more.

He doubled his advantage at the next and, although Kuchar holed a long putt for a half at the 14th, a great birdie at the par-four 15th gave the European a three-hole lead.

The match was settled at the 16th after Westwood lipped out with his first attempt to secure victory but then followed up from three feet.
