RaboDirect PRO12: Edinburgh return to winning ways against Ulster
Last Updated: 22/03/13 10:34pm
Edinburgh ended their 11-match losing streak after edging past Ulster 14-8 in Friday's RaboDirect PRO12 clash at Murrayfield.
Under the tutelage of interim coaches Stevie Scott and Duncan Hodge Edinburgh produced a stoic defensive display to halt the advancements of out-of-form Ulster.
The Irish region slipped off top spot recently and a fourth defeat in their last five games dents any hopes of a home semi-final.
Edinburgh made full use of their limited opportunities in the opening stages as the talented Piers Francis kicked the hosts into a 6-0 lead.
A Paddy Jackson penalty reduced the lead to within three points to draw a close to an attritional opening half.
After the interval Ulster were unable to capitalise on their territorial dominance as three missed Jackson penalties meant the home side hung to their slender lead.
While the Irish side looked the more dangerous, Edinburgh continued to defend resolutely and talented scrum-half Sean Kennedy was orchestrating proceedings superbly.
Against the run of play flanker Stuart Mcinally burst through the Ulster defence after a powerful surge from the back of the scrum by Netani Talei to score the opening try of the game and extend Edinburgh's lead to 11-3.
Ulster fashioned a swift riposte when Andrew Trimble crossed in the corner after collecting a well-judged kick in behind the last line of defence from Michael Allen.
Jackson's forgettable evening with the boot continued as his fourth miss of the night meant the home side maintained their lead.
At one stage in the season Ulster were 11 points clear at the top of the table but Francis' third penalty sealed the visitors' fate and continued their wretched run of form.
