New Zealand have omitted former IRB Sevens Player of the Year Tomasi Cama from their squad for the Commonwealth Games.

The 33-year-old has struggled with injury this season, missing the HSBC Sevens World Series events in Las Vegas and Hong Kong, while Gillies Kata has taken over the playmaking role.

Lote Raikabula also misses out, while Super Rugby-contracted duo Frank Halai and Adam Whitelock failed to break into the final 12 for Glasgow despite being included in the initial training squad.

DJ Forbes will skipper the defending champions, while Pita Ahki and Declan O'Donnell have both been called in.

X-factor

Coach Gordon Tietjens said: "It's a strong squad and the majority of the players played in the World Series and played exceptionally well.

"Pita Ahki is a very good Sevens player and excelled for the Blues this year and performed very well in the recent trials.

"Declan has come back from two shoulder operations and he was simply outstanding a few years ago. He has come back and trained very hard and is very fit. He has those X-factors; good feet, good acceleration, is big and strong and gives me great cover out wide."

New Zealand: Pita Ahki, Scott Curry, Sam Dickson, DJ Forbes (capt), Bryce Heem, Akira Ioane, Gillies Kaka, Ben Lam, Tim Mikkelson, Declan O'Donnell, Sherwin Stowers, Joe Webber
