England captain Greg Barden claims it is up to the players to turn their HSBC Sevens World Series challenge around.

Despite victory in Dubai, England currently lie fourth place in the standings with four legs of this season's competition to go.

Once again, old foes - and current Series leaders - New Zealand have proved to be their nemesis for Ben Ryan's side, inflicting defeats in the past three legs.

And Barden believes the players need to learn for these losses going into the next leg in Hong Kong.

"Nothing has gone wrong for us specifically, we have just lost crucial games against one opponent," Barden told Sky Sports.

"If we had won those games it would be a totally different scenario and we would be top. Unfortunately we didn't, so we can't focus in that.

"It all comes down to small percentages in games. It is just very small margins and we have been working on improving them. In particular, it is clarity when the pressure is on.

Clarity

"We've a lot of experience in terms of age so you could say that this shouldn't be an issue but we are young in the terms of Ben's plans.

"Ben is a really good coach and we all believe 100 per cent in the way he wants to play. As players, though, a lack of clarity in those vital positions - like in extra time against New Zealand - has cost us.

"We have brilliant coaches and have all the tools, so it is about us as players taking responsibility. It comes down to the application of the individual.

"It is not panic stations for us by any stretch; we've just lots of hard work to do. We are looking forward to the next four weeks before Hong Kong."

Despite losing to New Zealand in Port Elizabeth, Wellington and Las Vegas, Barden insists that the defending champions do not have a mental hold over England.

"I have never and will never fear New Zealand," insisted Barden.

"New Zealand aren't that special, they just do the basics really well.

Confident

"When you come up against the likes of Fiji, they are mavericks in the way they play. They can do some amazing things but they aren't there technically 100 per cent so you can get away with stuff at times.

"New Zealand, though, just get the basics spot on every time so you can't afford to switch off."

England currently have a month to regroup ahead of their trip to Hong Kong - and Barden is confident victory there will kick-start their challenge.

"I don't go into any tournament thinking we can't win," added Barden. "However I honestly believe we have got the players and tools to win.

"It isn't arrogance or anything like that, we know it won't be easy. I just believe we can do it.

"There is no reason why we can't win there and then go on to take the next step."
