New Zealander joins Heineken Cup runners-up

Ulster have completed the signing of New Zealand back row Nick Williams on a two-year contract. The 28-year-old played for RaboDirect PRO12 side Aironi last season, although the Italian franchise has now disbanded. Ulster's new coach Mark Anscombe knows all about compatriot Williams' ability after working with him at North Harbour. Williams played for rivals Munster in the 2008/09 season and helped them secure the Magners League title in his debut campaign. Director of rugby David Humphreys believes Williams will add a 'great deal' to their squad due to his ball-carrying ability and defensive attributes.

Standout

"Nick was a standout player during his time at Aironi and he will add a great deal to our squad," Humphreys told the club's official website. "His addition means there will be real depth right across the back row and this is vital, given that Stephen Ferris is under an IRFU Player Management Programme. "Mark Anscombe brought him out of club rugby in New Zealand and believes he can make a huge impact here at Ulster. He is an excellent ball carrier and is a very physical in defence." The club have also announced the signings of scrum-half Michael Heaney and back row forward Sean Doyle.
