South African World Cup winner CJ Van der Linde's potential move to Toulon as a medical joker appears to be off.

South African World Cup winner CJ Van der Linde's potential move to Toulon as a replacement for the injured Martin Castrogiovanni appears to be off.

The former Springbok prop was on trial in the South of France last week, but according to the Midi Olympique the Toulon staff decided he was struggling to keep up and chose not to sign him.

Instead former Pau tighthead Karim Bougherara, 25, is set to join the European champions to reinforce a weakened front row.

Italian international Castrogiovanni underwent an operation on an adductor problem last month and faces four months on the sidelines, with his initial replacement Simone Ferrari back in Italy having pulled out of his deal with the club.

On the other side of the scrum, Toulon look set to be without the services of loosehead Andrew Sheridan after he agreed a release.

The 34-year-old former England international is expected to retire after a series of neck injuries disrupted much of last season.
