The few who doubted Smit's leadership abilities were left silent after he led South Africa to World Cup glory in 2007. After being appointed coach, the first moves Peter de Villiers made was to assess Smit's availability as Bok skipper.

South Africa - 81 - 20

Smit remains one of the world's finest hookers. His throwing in the line-out is a pinpoint, and his work rate around the field is immense. However, during the Springbok's end of year tour to the UK, Smit was preferred at tighthead in a bid to accommodate Bismark du Plessis in the starting line-up.

Although Smit only played one match (against Wales) in the number three jumper before reverting back to hooker after Du Plessis was injured against Scotland - his impact was immense and has since been used at prop as well as hooker for the Sharks in this year's Super 14 too.
