British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland was pleased with his side's positive outlook during the 35-0 win over the Melbourne Rebels.

The Lions dominated at the set piece but also kept their opponents guessing by taking some quick taps and running the ball from inside their own half.

Gatland said that the players were keen to atone for last week's defeat to the Brumbies and felt they achieved that.

"We made a few mistakes and pushed a few passes but we didn't want to stop them from going out and playing rugby," he said.

"Our set piece was good, we defended really strongly and we were in good condition physically. The players made up for the disappointment of last week.

"We talked about keeping the tempo up. Once we got in front we wanted to keep playing, and they had a licence to do that.

"We wanted some quick taps, to keep the ball in play. You've got to enjoy those moments, particularly the last 20 minutes where we tried to keep the ball on the park."

Gatland admitted he had not yet thought about his side for the second Test against Australia but said he has been given a selection headache a number of players who impressed against the Rebels.

He said: "We wanted to wait until after tonight (before picking the team). There's no doubt that we'll pick up another couple of injuries in the next two games, so the players that performed tonight are going to be important for us."
