British and Irish Lions' team doctor James Robson has paid tribute to the professionalism of Warren Gatland's men.

Robson is on his sixth Lions tour as medical chief, with seven players having flown to Australia as injury cover with the trip at its halfway point.

So far however only two members of the original squad, Gethin Jenkins and props Cian Healy, have returned home early due to injuries.

"On this tour, I have found the group of players to be the most professional I have witnessed," said Robson.

"They have been brilliant. You do not have to chase any of them to come for treatment.

Motivation

"The greatest motivation for these guys is that which drove them to want to be here. They wanted to be on a Lions tour, and now they want to be in a Lions Test."

Robson previously expressed concern about rugby's injury rate following the 2009 Lions tour of South Africa but now believes the game has progressed.

"Overall, we have come back from that brink," Robson added.

"I do believe that rugby has made a bigger effort. Professionalism of players, the International Rugby Board (medical conference) getting together annually and co-operating together more often are all factors.

"We have four medics from different countries here, and we have no qualms about sharing information to help the players."

Robson will present his medical assessment to Gatland on Wednesday, ahead of the Lions' first Test team being announced, with Tommy Bowe (hand) and Jamie Roberts (hamstring) likely to be the only unavailable squad members.

Wing George North is set to feature after suffering a tight hamstring during the 64-0 win over a Combined Country XV last Tuesday and centre Manu Tuilagi is also recovering well from injury.
